LEAP INTO THE ABYSS

I made this simple falling game in the span of 2 days for the GMTK Game Jam of 2022. The goal of the game is to get as deep into the abyss as possible, and then climb out of it with the ladder to save your score. You can also jump again to increase your score further, but at the risk of hitting a sawblade and having to start all over! The sawblade sequences are randomly decided, so you never know what to expect!

Game jam theme: Roll of the dice (GMTK Game Jam 2022)

I created this game for the GMTK Game Jam 2022, which lasted from July 15th to July 17th. The theme of the jam was "roll of the dice". At first this sparked ideas in my mind about randomness and chance, but after some more thinking I realized that it can also be interpreted as taking risks. In the end, taking risks became a large part of the game's design, as you need to constantly reconsider when it's wise to use the ladder that saves but also locks your score.

Being my first ever game jam, I had no idea what it would be like to make a game in such a short timeframe. I can now say however that it's a pretty stressful experience, especially as a solo developer like me. You constantly need to juggle between concepting, programming, creating art, playtesting and so much more.
 
Because of this, good planning and time management is key. I used the first evening of the jam to come up with my idea, the entire day after to make the necessary models and program the mechanics, and the morning and afternoon of the final day to add more levels and fine-tune everything. After a rollercoaster of emotions in those 48 hours, I submitted my game before the deadline. Finishing an entire project in only two days is a challenge that's definitely not for everyone, and actually pulling it off feels very satisfying.
