LUMBERJUMP

Lumberjump is a 2D platformer where you play as PJ, a lumberjack who can throw his axe into wooden blocks to then use it as a platform. I originally started this to learn programming in Unity, but now I also practice my level design, pixel-art, sound design, music and other skills through working on it.

PROJECT DETAILS

Platform: PC

Tools used: Unity, Photoshop, Bandlab, Audacity

Team size: 1

Project started: 15-09-2019

Learning goals: C# programming basics, improve level & game design skills

Initially I started working on this project to learn how to program a 2D platformer in Unity. After figuring out how to do basic things like player movement and animations, I started adding more to the game. Collectibles, obstacles, backgrounds, menu's and more got implemented over the following months, as I learned how to program them. Making a game isn't only about programming however, this project also requires me to work on art, level design, sounds and plenty of other things.

After more than a year of development, I started thinking a bit more about my main character. What is his backstory? And even more important in a game, what can he do that no other character can? I eventually decided to make him a lumberjack, having the ability to throw his axe and climb with it. This now defines the gameplay, as levels are completely designed around throwing the axe into walls, enemies and other objects.

Lots of things have changed a lot over the time the game has been in development already, including the title which has now become Lumberjump instead of Platform Jumper to better reflect the game's USP. And more is still to come, as new content is still getting added while existing features are constantly reviewed and iterated on. I'm excited for where this project will go next, many new things are on the way in the near future.

Take a look at one of the levels:
